Sony's Blue-Ray Disc

Defined Tag:

If the words "Blue-Ray" were mentioned to anyone a few years ago some incredibly non-sequitur images may have popped into their head. The words seem evocative of a creature that lives in the ocean or the words can also be evocative of a Marvel Comics Superhero. Then again, Blue-Ray may be a cool name for a villain as well.

These days, it is very rare that a non-sequitur image will pop into anyone’s head when those words are mentioned because of the tremendous innovation in the electronics marketplace by the brilliant people over at Sony whose Blue-Ray disc is easily one of the best laser optics products to come down the research and development pike in many years.

It should come as no surprise that Sony has come up with a brilliant electronics product for the 21st century. The Sony Corporation has been at the forefront of consumer electronics for many decades and their introduction of the Betamax forever changed the face of home entertainment. (Sony’s decision, however, not to license the rights to the Betamax format proved to be a critical failure as competitor JVC ended up licensing out the VHS format and this sealed Betamax’s doom, but that is another story for another time)

Now, the Blue-Ray disc may be the inverse of the Betamax fiasco as a Blue-Ray disc has the potential to overtake the world of DVDs because the Blue-Ray disc is able to store far more information than a DVD disc as well as providing better picture and audio quality. It was the fact that DVD had better audio and video that put the nail in the coffin of the VCR and the VHS system so perhaps the B-R disc may prove to be the harbinger of the dawn of a new electronics age. We shall see how it develops.
